How to Perform Fuel Injection Service on a Dodge Caliber

The Dodge Caliber has been available since the 2006 model year. The Caliber was upgraded in 2007 to offer an SRT-4 style, and offers the option of a 2.4 liter turbo charged engine. The standard Caliber has the option of a 1.8-liter, a 2.0-liter, or a standard 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine. The fuel injection cleaner process is identical, regardless of the engine size of your Caliber, as all of the engines share a similar parts layout.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket set
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 1 can aerosol fuel injector cleaner
  • 1 bottle fuel-injector cleaner additive
  • Large cotton swap
  • Turn off the vehicle's engine. Open the hood and remove the lid on the air filter box by hand. Remove the air intake tube from the mass airflow sensor with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket. The mass airflow sensor is the metal box that sits in the air intake tube, between the air filter box and the engine.

  • Spray a small portion of the aerosol fuel injector cleaner onto a large cotton swab. Swipe the cotton swab inside of the mass airflow to clean the dirt and debris off of the airflow. Cleaning the airflow by hand will allow for better air intake performance and extend the life of the electronic portion of the mass airflow sensor.

  • Start the Caliber's engine and let it run. Locate the throttle body control, which is on the back side of the engine, just before the air intake enters the engine. Move the throttle body lever by hand to rev the engine.

  • Shake well and spray the remaining contents of the aerosol cleaner into the exposed end of the mass airflow. Increase the engine's rpm with your other hand to prevent stalling. If the engine stalls, restart the engine and raise the rpm higher using the throttle body linkage under the hood. Continue until the aerosol can is completely empty. Keep the engine's rpm high for at least 40 seconds to 1 minute after the aerosol can is empty to burn off the residual cleaner in your engine.

  • Turn off the Caliber's engine. Open the fuel-filler door on the side of the car. Remove the fuel-filler cap, where you put gasoline into your car. Empty the contents of the fuel injector cleaner additive into your gas tank. This process will allow the injector cleaner to coagulate with your fuel and clean everything from the fuel pump through your fuel lines.

  • Reinstall the air intake tube onto the mass airflow sensor, using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket. Check your air filter to make sure it is clean before reinstalling the air filter box lid. Install the air filter box lid only if the air filter does not need replaced.
