How to Replace the Motor Mount on a 2000 Saturn

Saturn vehicles feature motor mounts located at the top and bottom of their engines. Motor mounts secure the engine into place while reducing vehicle vibrations. Having to replace a motor mount is uncommon, but you may need to if you live in an area with a harsh climate with excessive heat or snowy conditions, or if your vehicle frequently comes into contact with salt and sand on roads. Motor mounts are usually found near the engine's serpentine belt. Replacing a motor mount is a relatively easy task when you have the correct tools and replacement parts on hand.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Tire iron
  • Jack stand
  • Scrap wood
  • Metric socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Motor mounts
  • Thread lock
  • Slotted screw driver
  • Park the Saturn on a flat surface, such as a driveway, and apply the vehicle's emergency brake. Open the engine hood and detach the negative wire from the battery terminal using an adjustable wrench.

  • Place a floor jack at the front passenger side lift point. Slightly raise the car to reduce the weight on the wheel. Loosen the four lug nuts with a tire iron. Raise the tire completely into the air and remove the lug nuts and wheel to expose the inside wheel well.

  • Set up a jack stand so it makes contact at the lift point near the floor jack. Lower the floor jack so the Saturn weight is on the jack stand. Slide the floor jack with a piece of scrap wood under the oil pan. Raise the engine slightly to remove weight off of the motor mounts.

  • Loosen and remove the nuts that secure the upper motor mount using a socket and ratchet. Lift the mount straight up to remove. Place the new motor mount over the five threaded bolts. Apply thread lock to the bolts and thread on the five nuts. Tighten the nuts using the same socket and ratchet.

  • Expose the lower motor mount by removing the plastic shielding located at the rear of the front passenger wheel well using a slotted screw driver to detach the plastic fasteners. Manipulate the plastic shields to remove them from behind the wheel and strut assembly.

  • Loosen and remove the bolt that secures the lower motor mount to the engine block using a socket and ratchet. Remove the nut that secures the motor mount to the frame. Replace the old mount. Apply thread lock to the threads of the bolts. Thread the nut on, followed by the bolt, and tighten them with the same socket and ratchet.

  • Remove the floor jack from under the oil pan. Reattach the plastic shields using the plastic fasteners to secure them into place. Set the wheel in place and secure it by tightening the four lug nuts with the tire iron. Remove the jack stand using the floor jack. Reattach the negative wire to the battery terminal and tighten it with the adjustable wrench.
