How to Install a Bumper on a 65 Mustang

The 1965 Ford Mustang featured a pair of one-piece, metal bumpers. Unlike modern vehicles that have bumpers that can withstand minor bumps without sustaining damage, the '65 Mustang's bumpers will dent permanently. Over time, the chrome finish tends to wear and rust bubbles growing underneath the finish are not uncommon. Fortunately, reproduction bumpers are readily available from classic Mustang parts dealers and installation is fairly straightforward.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench
  • Socket wrench

Front Bumper

  • Remove the two bracket bolts on each end of the bumper with an open-end wrench. Each bolt is secured with a single nut that must be accessed from inside of the wheel well. Remove the nuts and pull the bolts out of the front of the bumper.

  • Remove the two bracket bolts from close to the center of the bumper with an open-end wrench. The bolts are secured in the same manner as the end brackets and must also be removed from inside of the wheel well. Remove the nuts and pull the bolts out of the front of the bumper.

  • Lift the bumper off the Mustang.

  • Position the new bumper onto the front of the car.

  • Install the two bracket bolts from close to the center of the bumper. Insert the bolts through the front of the fender, then install and tighten the two nuts to secure the bumper to its two brackets.

  • Install and tighten the two end bracket bolts in the same manner used to install the center bracket bolts.

Rear Bumper

  • Open the trunk to access the bumper's four retaining bolts, located underneath the interior-side of the taillight panel.

  • Remove the bumper's four retaining bolts with a socket wrench to release the bumper.

  • Position the new bumper onto the back of the Mustang.

  • Install and tighten the bumper's four retaining bolts with a socket wrench to secure the bumper in place.
