How to Replace the Oil Level Sensor in an Oldsmobile Aurora

The oil level sensor in the Oldsmobile Aurora operates the oil "dummy light" in the dash to tell the driver when the level of the oil in the oil pan is low -- that is its sole function. The Aurora has a separate pressure switch for the oil pressure gauge. Depending on the year and model Aurora, yours may have either of the switches, or just an oil pressure switch.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Creeper
  • Wrench
  • Jack up the front of the Aurora with a floor jack. Support it with jack stands. Roll under the engine with a creeper.

  • Look on either side of the engine for the oil level sensor. Depending on the year and model, it could be on the passenger side or the driver's side, though it is usually on the driver's side and located in the side of the oil pan. The sensor has a two-wire wiring harness plugged into it.

  • Unplug the wiring harness connector from the sensor by prying the tabs on either side of the plug away from the plug, then pulling the plug off the sensor. Unscrew the sensor with a wrench, by turning to the left. Pull it out of the oil pan.

  • Screw the new oil level sensor into the oil pan and tighten it snugly, but be sure not to tighten it too much -- the metal oil pan walls are thin and bend easily. Plug the wiring harness connector into the sensor.

  • Lower the Aurora off the jacks.
