How to Install a Thermostat in a Jeep Wrangler

The thermostat on your Jeep Wrangler, located on the front of the engine, controls the engine's temperature. It does this by controlling the flow of coolant through the engine. Proper engine temperature is important to maintain to ensure a long-lasting engine. The thermostat will eventually get dirty and fail, which will cause the engine to run too hot or too cold. Change a faulty thermostat to avoid damage to the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Pliers
  • Place a bucket under the radiator drain plug. Remove the drain plug from the radiator using a ratchet and socket. Allow the coolant to drain into the bucket to be re-used. Re-install the radiator drain plug.

  • Open the hood and locate the thermostat housing, located in the front of the engine. Hoses from the radiator connect to it.

  • Remove the hose clamps that connect the radiator and heater hoses to the thermostat housing. Remove the hoses from the housing.

  • Remove the electrical connector from the thermostat housing by pressing the release lever on the connector.

  • Remove the two bolts that secure the thermostat housing to the engine using a ratchet and socket.

  • Remove the thermostat and gasket from the engine. Ensure that the gasket surface is clean and free from debris before installing the new gasket and thermostat.

  • Re-install the thermostat housing, hoses and electrical connection.

  • Re-fill the radiator with coolant.
