How to Replace the Front Hub on the 2001 Mustang

To change failing wheel bearings, the entire front hub assembly must be replaced because the wheel bearings cannot be changed or serviced inside the hub. Replacing the front hub on a 2000 Ford Mustang can be completed without a professional mechanic. However, it should be attempted by those with at least some mechanical automotive knowledge. The task involves using a torque wrench and might involve and hub puller. Both of these items can be rented at most auto parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack stands
  • Automotive jack
  • Hanger wire
  • Socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Raise the front of the vehicle with an automotive jack and support the vehicle with jack stands.

  • Remove the lug nuts and remove the front wheel.

  • Remove the brake caliper. Remove the caliper mounting bolt and pivot the caliper from the brake pad assembly. Hang the caliper from the coil spring with a piece of hanger wire.

  • Pull the brake pads and brake pad assembly from the rotor and remove.

  • Pull the rotor away from the wheel hub assembly and remove.

  • Remove the grease cap from the hub assembly. Place a large, fat screwdriver or chisel behind the cap and pry it away from the assembly.

  • Remove the hub assembly retaining nut and washer. Pull the assembly away from the vehicle and remove. A hub puller might be needed if the assembly does not come off of the spindle easily.

  • Place the new hub assembly onto the spindle. Grease the spindle with wheel bearing grease. Install a new hub assembly washer and hub assembly retaining nut. Tighten the nut to 245 ft-lbs. Replace the grease cap.

  • Place the rotor over the wheel studs and put the brake pads and brake pad assembly into place. Replace the brake caliper and tighten the caliper mounting bolt to 23 ft-lbs.

  • Replace the front wheel and lug nuts, tightening the lug nuts to 95 ft-lbs.

  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
