How to Program Keyless Entry for a 1998 Ford Contour

The Ford Contour was introduced in 1995 and was designed to replace the Ford Tempo. The 1998 model underwent a mild facelift that features styling cues from the Mercury Mystique. Base models received a 125 hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Ford Contours that featured the SVT trim package received the high-performance 195 hp V-6 power plant. Some of the standard features and options available on the contour included antilock brakes, traction control and keyless entry. Programming a replacement FOB for your vehicle is an easy task you can complete yourself, without the need of a professional technician.

Things You'll Need

  • Paperclip or short length of wire
  • Turn your ignition key to the “Run” or “Acc” position.

  • Locate the 2-pin remote keyless entry programming connector positioned behind the glove box compartment, near or underneath the floorboard carpeting.

  • Insert your paperclip or short length of wire into the programming connector so that the two connections are bridged together. Disconnect your paperclip or short length of wire from the connector after hearing the vehicle's horn.

  • Press one of the buttons on your replacement keyless entry remote. After pressing any button on your keyless entry or remote, you will hear your vehicle's horn sound off again.

  • Turn your vehicle's ignition to the “Off” position to complete the programming process.
