How to Locate an EGR Valve on a Mazda MX-6

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve is an emissions-reducing component on your Mazda MX-6. If you want to remove the EGR valve for cleaning or if you want to replace it with a new one, you'll first need to find it inside your engine compartment. The EGR valve is a distinctive component under the hood; discerning it and finding its location is not difficult, even for novices.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves (optional)
  • Shut your Mazda MX-6's engine off. Either let the engine cool down for about 30 minutes or put on a thick pair of gloves if you plan on touching any components under the hood.

  • Pull the hood release underneath the steering wheel and walk in front of the engine compartment. Lift the hood and use the rod to support it.

  • Examine the rear part of the engine compartment against the firewall. This component is the intake manifold. It looks like a series of large metal tubes.

  • Look on the passenger-side end of the intake manifold. Here you'll find the EGR valve. The EGR valve is a small metal cylinder with an electrical connection attached to it. It also has two small rubber hoses attached to it. The top part of the EGR valve looks kind of like a spaceship.
