How to Troubleshoot a 2007 Mustang Power Window

The 2007 Ford Mustang utilizes a spring-assisted, scissors-type window regulator. In layman's terms, the window regulator is the mechanism that, in combination with the window motor, creates the up and down movement of the window. For illustrative purposes, the regulator is much like a pair of scissors positioned with the blades up. One handle is in a fixed position on the door, and the motor operates the other handle. As the scissors open, the window drops. The reverse motion raises the window.

Things You'll Need

  • Voltmeter
  • Small screwdriver
  • Turn the ignition key to the “On” position and attempt to raise and lower each window from the driver’s door main window switch. If one or more windows fail to operate, try to operate the windows from their individual switches. If they operate with their dedicated switches, the master switch on the driver’s door is bad. If they do not respond or none of the windows operates, proceed to next step.

  • Inspect the fuse box inside the vehicle looking for a blown fuse. Depending on the model 2007 Mustang, the fuse box could be located on the driver’s side kick panel or up under the driver’s side dash.

  • Pry up the master window switch on the driver’s door by placing the screwdriver blade carefully under the rear part of the switch and pressing down on the screwdriver handle. Once the rear of the switch is up, pull the switch back toward the armrest to release it from the door panel.

  • Check for voltage with the key on. Use the voltmeter by placing the meter’s black lead on a good ground. Use the red lead to probe the underside of the switch, looking for main power. Make a mental note of the location of the main power to the switch. Operate each individual window switch on the master switch while probing for power as the switch is toggled. If the switch to the affected window does not have power present when the switch is toggled, the main switch is bad.

If power is present when the switch is toggled, it means that the window motor is getting power and yet fails to operate. The window motor needs to be replaced. The type of window regulator used in the Mustang rarely fails, so the window motor is the only part to replace.
