How to Make Windshield Washer Fluid Spray Out

Windshield washer fluid, a mix of water and a cleaning agent, sprays through nozzles mounted in one of two locations: on the hood of your vehicle or on the wiper arms themselves. The nozzles atomize the fluid, spraying it over a wide area of the windshield, to facilitate the wiper blade's job of scraping debris or swiping away rain that may obstruct your view as you drive. Fortunately, you can fix fluid that is dribbling or squirting out of nozzles so it sprays correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Needle
  • Soap sprayer
  • Locate your windshield washer nozzles. Look on the wiper blade arms if you don't see them at the top-center of the hood.

  • Grip the nozzle in your fingers and twist it gently to loosen it from the hood. It is still attached to the windshield washer delivery hose, so don't jerk it loose.

  • Clean the nozzle head with the sharp end of your pick or needle. Carefully go around the entire surface, which is less than a centimeter across, scraping off any particulate clogging the flow of washer fluid. Reinstall the windshield washer nozzle and test the system for delivery. If the washer fluid still does not spray out properly, continue to the next step.

  • Grip the nozzle in one hand and hold the delivery tube in the other. Carefully twist the nozzle off the delivery tube. Tap the nozzle vigorously against the hood of the car and spray it with dishwasher soap. Reinstall the nozzle on the delivery hose and press the components back into place on the hood or the windshield wiper arm.
