How to Remove the Starter for a Honda S2000

Changing the starter on the Honda S2000 differs from many vehicles because you can reach the starter from the top of the engine. To avoid crawling under the car to reach the starter, you must remove the air intake tube for easier access to the mounting bolts but you do not have to remove the radiator hoses to maintain adequate working room. Because you do not have to crawl under the car to work, removing the starter is an easier task to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension bar
  • Long extension bar
  • Remove the negative battery cable form the battery with an adjustable wrench to prevent creating a possible short while you work on the Honda S2000.

  • Remove the clamps that secure the air intake tube to the throttle body and to the air-intake filter box. To do so, loosen the clamp with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the intake tube out of the engine bay and place it off to the side.

  • Locate the starter by looking down between the radiator and the engine. It is 8 inches in length, tubular and bolts to the bell housing. It has one large black wire extending from the back of the solenoid and one wire harness connected to it.

  • Remove the retaining nut that holds the large black wire to the back of the solenoid with a 12mm socket. Pull the wire off the stud.

  • Press the locking clip on the wiring harness and pull the harness out of the starter.

  • Remove the two 14mm bolts that secure the starter to the engine. Connect a short extension bar between the ratchet and the socket to remove the upper bolt and connect a long extension bar between the ratchet and socket to remove the lower mounting bolt.

  • Pull outward on the starter to remove it from the bell housing.
