How to Install a Wiper Switch

The wiper switch, which is located within the vehicle's steering column, controls how the windshield wipers function. If this switch becomes damaged or broken, the wipers can be compromised. To repair or install a new switch, you will need to remove the steering column cover.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Disconnect the vehicle's battery. Loosen the nut that holds the cable clamp to the negative power terminal. Remove the clamp and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal.

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the steering wheel cover. Pry the case off using the appropriate application of strength.

  • Remove the steering wheel retaining nut with a socket wrench. Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.

  • Use a screwdriver to remove the steering column covers. Take out all the screws and pull off both upper and lower steering column covers.

  • Locate and remove the wiper switch electrical plug. The plug is typically located on the left side of the steering column.

  • Plug the new wiper switch into the electrical plug. Secure the switch with the recently removed screws.

  • Reassemble the steering column, steering wheel and battery by following Steps 1-4 in reverse order.
