How to Repair Minor Car Scratches

Occasionally, vehicles get scratches from contact with other objects or cars, and the pristine finish is marred. It is possible to repair a minor scratch from a vehicle's finish without further damaging the car's body. You can restore your vehicle's finish to its original condition with sandpaper and a few other tools rather than hiring a professional to do the body work.

Things You'll Need

  • Waterproof, ultra-fine grain, 2,000-grit sandpaper
  • Sanding block
  • Polishing compound
  • Clean cloth
  • Car wax
  • Wet a piece of ultra-fine, 2,000-grit waterproof sandpaper with water. Make sure it is thoroughly wet, but do not soak.

  • Secure a piece of sandpaper to a sanding block with a clamp. Sand in the direction of the grain of paint. Go out side the scratch 1-inch on all sides of the scratch to help the repairs blend in better.

  • Rub a polishing compound on the affected area with a soft cloth. Evenly apply the compound and do not finish polishing until the clear coat of the finish emerges.

  • Squeeze out a small quantity of car wax on a damp sponge or cloth after you applied the polish. Apply the wax in a circular direction.

  • Allow the wax to dry for about 30 minutes. Remove the wax with a soft cloth in the same manner as you applied it.
