How to Change the Fuel Filter in a 2000 F-250 SuperDuty

Every truck needs regular maintenance to stay in good condition. One part of truck maintenance is to change the fuel filter about every 25,000 miles. The fuel filter is the component of the fueling system that keeps dirt and rust out of the engine. Once the fuel filter becomes clogged with dirt, it must be replaced before dirt particles cause serious damage to your engine.

Things You'll Need

  • New fuel filter
  • Ford fuel line disconnect tool (T90T-9550-S)
  • Gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Park your Ford F-250 in a safe area on level ground. Apply the parking brake or apply tire stops to prevent your vehicle from rolling while you change the fuel filter. Open the hood of your Ford F-250. Locate the fuel pump fuse in the fusebox, and pull it. Start the engine and let it idle until it stalls. This will depressurize the fuel system. Locate your battery and disconnect the negative battery cable. Go to the driver's side of your vehicle and unscrew the fuel tank filler cap. Allow the fuel tank filler cap to remain unscrewed.

  • Crawl underneath the driver's side of your Ford F-250. Look for your fuel filter below the seating area. The fuel filter is along the fuel line mounted to your vehicle's frame.

  • Use a fuel line disconnect tool to remove the fuel filter from the fuel line. As you are removing the fuel filter, some fuel may spill out of the fuel line. This is normal. Be prepared with a small pail to catch any fuel that may spill out of the fuel line and/or fuel filter.

  • Replace the old fuel filter with a new fuel filter. Make sure that the arrow on the filter is pointing toward the engine. Push the fuel line onto the filter and apply pressure until the fuel line snaps on. You should hear an audible click when the fuel filter locks onto the fuel line. Test to see if the fuel filter is secured by pulling it gently.

  • Reinstall the fuel pump fuse. Connect the negative battery cable and close the hood of your vehicle. Screw the fuel tank filler cap back into place. Start the engine. Check for leaks.
