How to Program a 2000 Subaru Outback Keyless

Keyless entry came standard on the 2000 Subaru Outback. This means that all models have a remote keyless entry module, and all models can be programmed to use with a keyless remote. If you purchased your Outback used, and it did not come with a remote, you'll still be able to program one to it--a working remote is not required to enter programming mode. Up to four remotes can be programmed to the Outback's keyless entry module.

  • Press the "Security" button on your separate alarm remote to disarm the security system. Not all 2000 Outback models are equipped with the feature, so this may not be required.

  • Open the driver's side door, sit down, and then close the door. Insert your key into the ignition. Inspect the ignition marking to find "Lock" and "On." "Lock" is one position behind "Off." "On" is the setting right before "Start."

  • Quickly turn the key from "Lock" to "On" 10 times, ending with the key in "Lock." After doing this, you'll hear the horn sound. If you don't hear the horn, get out of the vehicle, close the door, and start over.

  • Open and close the driver's door. Press the "Unlock" button on the keyless remote you want to program. The horn will sound twice, indicating the remote is synchronized. Repeat this step with each additional remote you want to program.

  • Pull the key out of the ignition. The horn will sound three times, indicating that you have exited programming mode.
