How to Replace an Ignition Lock Cylinder on a '98 Dodge Neon

The 1998 Dodge Neon was equipped with a two-piece assembly to start the engine from inside the car: a lock cylinder and an ignition switch. Like most types of locks, a key is inserted into a lock cylinder to actuate a number of tumblers. When the tumblers engage, the cylinder is then rotated with the key to activate the ignition switch. Fortunately, because the ignition switch and the lock cylinder are separate components, the ignition switch does not have to be disturbed to replace the lock cylinder.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a wrench to avoid an electrical shock, then allow at least two minutes to pass for the air bag system to deactivate.

  • Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder, then turn the key to the “RUN” position.

  • Locate the hole in the plastic shroud underneath the bottom of the steering column, then push the tab in the center of the hole and pull the lock cylinder out of the steering column using the ignition key.

  • Insert the new ignition key into the replacement lock cylinder, then rotate the key to the “RUN” position while holding the cylinder stationary.

  • Insert the lock cylinder into the steering column until the cylinder stops, then rotate the key to the “OFF” position and remove the key.

  • Reconnect the battery cable.
