How to Install a Corvette Starter

The Chevrolet Corvette was first produced in 1953 and production continues today. Every model year is equipped with an electric starter to start the engine. The starters consist of the starter motor and a solenoid to engage the starter. Starter replacement is required when the starter or solenoid fail and the engine can not be started. Corvette starters are a common part available at many auto-parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Battery terminal wrench
  • Wrenches
  • Ratchet
  • Socket

Starter Removal

  • Remove the negative battery cable from the battery using an open-end wrench or battery terminal wrench.

  • Open the trunk, hood and each door slightly to avoid damage when raising the car off the floor. Raise the front of the Corvette off the ground using the floor jack. Secure the Corvette using a jack stand on each side of the car.

  • Remove the electrical wire from the solenoid using a small wrench. Remove the electrical wire attached to the starter with a wrench.

  • Loosen and remove the two bolts holding the starter to the bell housing. Use a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts while holding the starter in place to prevent it from falling from the bell housing.

  • Remove the starter from the car by firmly pulling the starter away from the bell housing. Apply lateral motion to the starter if it is difficult to remove from the bell housing.

  • Compare the new starter to the old starter to confirm it is the correct replacement. Inspect the starter gear, mounting points and electrical connection posts to make sure the new starter will work.

  • Insert the new starter in the bell housing and thread in both of the bolts to secure the starter. Tighten the bolts with the socket and ratchet.

  • Attach the solenoid wire to the new solenoid connection post and secure by tightening the nut with a wrench. Attach the starter wire to the new starter connection post and secure the nut with a wrench.

  • Lower the car from the jack stand using the floor jack. Reattach the negative battery cable to the battery with the battery terminal wrench. Shut the doors, hood and trunk before attempting to start the Corvette.
