How to Install Headlight Switches on the Ford F150

The headlight switches on your Ford F150 control the high beam, low beam, and turn signals. This switch should give you years of trouble-free performance. But, if you go to turn on your headlights and nothing happens, though the headlight bulbs are not blown, it's likely that the switch has failed. Since it's not safe to drive without a working headlight switch, you need to replace it right away. Replacement switches can be purchased from most auto-parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Pin punch
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Unscrew the mounting screws that hold the bottom steering cover in place using a screwdriver and pull the cover down.

  • Pull the headlight stalk out away from the steering wheel and then rotate it around until you see a small slit in the stalk. This is the access hole you'll need to remove the stalk.

  • Slide the pin punch into the slit and pull the stalk off the steering column.

  • Unplug the switch electrical connector from the factory harness.

  • Unscrew the switch mounting screws that hold the switch to the steering column and remove the switch.

  • Mount the new switch and secure it with factory mounting screws.

  • Reconnect the electrical connector.

  • Mount the steering-column cover and secure it with mounting screws.
