The 2000 Chevy Silverado is one of the vehicles with the fuel pump installed within the fuel tank contained within a special module. You need to replace the entire module if the fuel pump no longer works; the individual pump can't be replaced in the module. Use extreme caution when removing the fuel tank from the truck and the module from the tank, as the fuel system is under pressure; relieve that pressure before proceeding.
Open the fuel door on the side and open the cap. Remove the three screws mounting the flange to the fuel-filler pipe using a Torx wrench.
Unplug the fuel-pump relay from inside the engine's fuse box; the diagram inside the box cover will show you the correct one. Start and crank the engine for several seconds; look for it to stall after a few seconds or not start, relieving the fuel pressure.
Disconnect the truck's negative battery cable.
Siphon out the fuel from the tank with a siphoning kit--never by mouth.
Raise the rear end and support it on jack stands; unbolt and remove the tank's shield if one is equipped.
Remove the fuel-filler ground strap from the truck body and disconnect the fuel supply and return lines at their quick-connect fittings.
Raise a transmission jack to support the fuel tank. Unbolt and remove the tank's support straps using a wrench.
Lower the jack with the fuel tank, disconnect the fuel-pump module's electrical connectors and the fuel-filler pipe (loosen its clamp with pliers) and remove the tank.
Disconnect the remaining fuel and EVAP lines connected to the fuel-pump module.
Grip the pump's retaining ring with locking pliers and rotate the ring counterclockwise while releasing the ring's locking tap with a needle-nose pointer tool and remove the ring.
Pull the fuel-pump module out of the tank; you may need to angle it slightly while removing it.
Clean off the fuel tank's surface with a rag soaked in lacquer thinner or acetone. Make sure the replacement fuel pump has a fresh seal underneath the module's top end.
Install the new fuel pump module in the fuel tank, angling it so you don't damage the sending unit float; make sure the module's fuel-line fittings are positioned so they will connect to the lines. Press the module down until it is seated in the tank.
Place the locking ring on the module, make sure it is properly seated in the groove and turn it clockwise until the locking tab engages.
Reconnect the electrical connectors and fuel/EVAP lines to the tank, then raise the tank into position with the transmission jack and bolt the straps in place.
Connect the filler hose to the tank with its hose clamp. Connect the fuel-filler ground strap to the truck body and connect the fuel supply and return lines with their quick-connect fittings. Bolt the tank shield in place with your wrench.
Lower the truck off the jack stands.
Refill the fuel tank.
Reconnect the negative battery cable and the fuel-pump fuse.
