How to Replace a Headlamp in a '96 Chevy 1500 Truck

The 1996 Chevy 1500 was manufactured with sealed beam headlights and composite headlights. Sealed beam headlights mean the entire light assembly needs replacement when a bulb burns out, while composite headlights mean the bulb needs replacement. Different models of the vehicle used one headlight system or the other. When a headlamp blows out on your Chevy 1500, you should replace it immediately to ensure your safety while driving.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Replacement sealed beam headlight Model No. H6054
  • Replacement composite headlight bulb Model No. 6052

Sealed Beam Headlight System

  • Remove the four screws on the front of the headlight retainer using a Phillips screwdriver and slide the headlight lamp and retainer out of the frame of the vehicle.

  • Pull the retainer off of the front of the lamp and unplug the electrical connector from the back of the lamp. Discard the lamp once the electrical connector is removed.

  • Plug the electrical connector into the new headlight lamp and slide the lamp into the frame of the vehicle.

  • Push the headlight retainer onto the lamp and insert the four screws to secure it.

Composite Headlight System

  • Open the hood of the 1500 and remove the two screws on the headlight support. The screws are located near the radiator support on the car frame.

  • Pull the headlight lens assembly out of the frame and unplug the electrical connector.

  • Turn the bulb to the left and pull it out of the socket. Discard the bulb after removal.

  • Insert the replacement bulb into the socket, turn it to the right until it is tight and plug the electrical connector into the back.
