Steering Stabilizer Removal for an F250

The steering stabilizer in a Ford F250 dampens harmonic vibrations that can build in the front suspension when driving at higher speeds over rough surfaces. Unfortunately for the stabilizer, it hangs at the lowest part of the front suspension and is prone to damage from road debris or sudden vertical changes in the road surface. Once the stabilizer is damaged or the seals give out, the stabilizer can no longer perform its job and should be replaced. Fortunately, this job can be performed by anyone with a modicum of mechanical skill in about 15 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Box wrench
  • Replacement steering stabilizer
  • Cutters
  • Unbolt the top end of the stabilizer using the socket set and the box wrench. Set the bolt and nut aside. Slide the top of the stabilizer out of the mounting bracket.

  • Unbolt the bottom end using the box wrench and set the nut aside.

  • Pull the old stabilizer out of the suspension and put the replacement stabilizer in position. Install the nut on the bottom and tighten it down with the box wrench.

  • Use the cutters to clip the retaining band off the stabilizer and allow it to extend until you can insert the bolt through the mounting bracket and top eyelet on the stabilizer. The hydraulic pressure inside the stabilizer will slowly extend it. As it is doing so, guide it into the bracket with one hand and be prepared to insert the bolt with the other when it is centered in the bracket.

  • Put the fastener back on the bolt and tighten down using the box wrench and socket set.
