How to Remove a Hyundai Accent Heater Core

The heater core in your Hyundai Accent acts as a radiator-type of device. Engine coolant is routed through tubing in the core. A fan then blows this warmed air into the passenger cabin, providing heat so that you can stay warm. Over time this core can fail. If it does, then you won't be getting any heat into the cabin. This is usually more of a concern if you live in the northern United States where it gets very cold during the winter. However, when the heater core dies, you can simply replace it with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Catch pan
  • 1/8-inch pin punch
  • Disconnect the cable running to the negative battery terminal. To do this, you'll need to loosen the nut holding the cable clamp to the terminal. Turn the nut counterclockwise to loosen the clamp and slide it off of the terminal.

  • Remove the lower steering column cover by pulling it straight down.

  • Remove the airbag assembly. Remove the bolts on either side of the steering wheel. They are located underneath the steering wheel, near the steering column. Remove the rest of the steering column and wheel cover.

  • Unplug the electrical connector running to the airbag assembly.

  • Remove the center bolt holding the steering wheel in place and pull the steering wheel off the steering column.

  • Insert the pin punch into the pin hole underneath the ignition lock cylinder. Turn the ignition to the "II" position with the ignition key. Press on the pin punch to release the lock cylinder and using the ignition key, pull the ignition lock out.

  • Open the hood and place a catch pan underneath the radiator. Remove the hose clamp on the drain hose connected to the radiator. This will be on the bottom of the radiator. Allow the radiator to drain completely.

  • Press on the the locking ramp and take the lever from the secondary air temperature control off.

  • Remove the primary air temperature control door shaft from the pin.

  • Pull the heater core cover and seal off the heater core. Remove the heater core from the HVAC housing by pressing on the core tubes and core assembly.
