How to Replace a Nissan Quest Coil

Up until 2002, the Nissan Quest used a single coil. In 2003, the Quest began using the coil-on-plug system with a magnetic trigger. High-performance coils are available for all models up to 2002, producing increased voltage and longer spark curves. The 2003 and later models have one coil on each spark plug. There are no spark plug wires, only a spark plug boot attached to the coil.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of wrenches
  • Set of ¼-inch sockets
  • ¼-inch ratchet

Single Coil Systems

  • Disconnect the coil secondary wire by pulling the coil wire out of the coil.

  • Disconnect the positive and negative wires on the topside of the coil. The older models have these wires held on by terminals, and they can be removed with a small wrench. The newer single coil units have a wire connector that can be pulled off by hand.

  • Remove the bolts holding the single coil by using a ¼-inch drive socket and ratchet. Replace the coil in reverse order of removal.

Coil-on-Plug Systems

  • Remove the cover running down the center of the valve cover that conceals the coils. Use a ¼-inch drive socket and ratchet for this process.

  • Disconnect the electrical connectors on the coils by squeezing the connectors and pulling them off of the coil.

  • Remove the two 10 mm bolts holding each coil down using a 10 mm socket and ratchet. Using a twisting action, pull the coil off of the spark plug and out of the valve cover. Install the new coils in reverse order of removal.
