How to Install Torque Engine Mounts on a Grand Prix

Most front wheel drive vehicles are equipped with a torque style engine mount that controls the engine’s torsion. Without this mount, the engine would rock over during acceleration and cause considerable damage to the various accessories, the transaxle and the engine itself. The torque mount on a Pontiac Grand Prix is located at the top of the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Box wrench set
  • Rubber mallet
  • Replacement torque mounts
  • Pry bar (optional)
  • Remove the retaining bolt holding the first torque mount to the engine bracket. Put the box wrench on the bolt head while loosening the nut with the socket set. Pull the retaining bolt out once the nut is removed. If the retaining bolt won’t slide out easily, tap it out with the rubber mallet. Never strike the retaining bolt with a metal hammer.

  • Unbolt the chassis retainer bolts from the other end of the torque mount with the socket set. Lift the torque mount up and out of the Grand Prix’s engine bay and insert the first replacement mount in its place.

  • Bolt the chassis end of the replacement torque mount back down, using the socket set. Line the engine end of the mount up with the engine bracket and slide the retaining bolt into position. Hold the retaining bolt in place with the box wrench and tighten the nut onto it with the socket set. If the torque mount eyelets do not line up with the engine bracket eyelets, you may need to pry the engine carefully into position to allow the retaining bolt to pass easily through both sets of eyelets. Never try to pound the retaining bolt back into position with the mallet--doing so can cause damage to the threads on the retaining bolt, which will render it useless.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 4 on the other torque mount. Never unbolt both torque mounts at once. Having one mount firmly attached helps keep the other mount properly aligned with the engine bracket for ease of retaining bolt removal and reinstallation.
