How to Change the Front Sway Bar Bushings on a Mustang

The Ford Mustang comes equipped with a large-diameter sway bar, and polyurethane bushings designed to control body roll in a turn and improve handling without increasing suspension stiffness. The result is a vehicle that provides exceptional cornering ability without sacrificing a smooth ride. Over time, the bushings, which attach the sway bar to the frame and the lower control arms, deteriorate and require replacement. This home repair can be done with basic hand tools in less than two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch-drive socket set
  • Wrench set
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Hammer
  • Pry bar
  • Silicon grease
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels, and apply the parking brake. Lift the front of the Mustang, using the floor jack, until the front wheels are off the ground. Place jack stands under the front sub-frame, and lower the car onto them. Remove the floor jack to gain maximum room under the car.

  • Lift the lower control arm slightly with the floor jack to take tension off the sway bar's end links, which attach the outside ends of the sway bar to the left and right lower control arms of the car. Using the socket wrench, remove the lock nut from the long center bolt of each sway bar end link. Lower the jack under the control arm, and remove the end links and bushings.

  • Remove the bolts that attach the sway bar's bracket to the frame of the Mustang. Use a pry bar to pry the bracket from the old bushing. Remove the old bushing from the sway bar. Lightly coat one of the new sway bar bushings with silicon grease, and slip it around the sway bar. Push the sway bar's bushing bracket onto the new bushing, and bolt it into place.

  • Raise the lower control arm slightly with the floor jack. Install a new end link and bushing onto the sway bar and lower control arm. Tighten the center bolt and nut securely until the new bushings start to compress and bulge slightly. Repeat the process on the other side of the car.

  • Raise the car off the jack stands with the floor jack, and remove the stands. Lower the vehicle slowly to the ground. Remove the wheel chocks, and test-drive the car.
