How to Change an Expedition Window Motor

Power windows are a wonderful convenience when they work and a serious inconvenience when they don't. The Ford Expedition power window system includes the window switch, window regulator, window motor, a fuse and wiring. If any of these items fails, you'll be opening the door instead of rolling down the window. If you have determined the window motor is the culprit, you can spend a few hours replacing it yourself, if you have the right tools and basic mechanical skills.

Things You'll Need

  • Packing tape
  • Pocket screwdriver
  • Trim pin removal tool
  • Socket set
  • Drill (optional)
  • Replacement window motor
  • Wrap the packing tape from the outside of the window over the top of the door frame and down onto the inside of the window, making sure it adheres to the glass and holds the window fully upright.

  • Remove the fasteners holding the door panel to the door with the socket set. Depending on the year of your Expedition, and trim package, you may need to remove the bezel around the door handle, reflector lenses, trim covers or the bezel where the window switch resides in order to access these fasteners. Pry the bezels and trim covers off using the pocket screwdriver carefully. If you need to remove the bezel around the switches, go ahead and disconnect the wiring harness from the switches now, using the pocket screwdriver to unseat the retaining clips.

  • Pull out any trim pins using the trim pin removal tool, which you can purchase very inexpensively at the local auto parts store. The best place to access the first trim pin is often at the bottom, rear edge of the door panel by sliding the head of the tool between the door and the door panel.

  • Lift the door panel upward and pull it away from the door. If you did not disconnect the lock and window switches in step two, do so now before moving the door panel more than a few inches from the door. Set the panel someplace safe to avoid getting it dirty or damaged during the rest of the repair.

  • Unbolt the window motor from the window regulator and from the door mount using the socket set. In some model years, the window motor was riveted to the regulator, in which case you will need to drill the rivets out before the motor can be removed.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness from the window motor and take it out of the door.

  • Insert the new motor and connect the wiring harness to it. Once done, bolt the motor to the regulator and the door mount. If you drilled the old motor out, the new motor should come with its own fasteners for use during the installation.

  • Reassemble the door in reverse of how it was taken apart and remove the packing tape.
