How to Replace the Spark Plugs on a Suzuki SX4

Changing your car's spark plugs is a simple maintenance task that every car owner should be able to accomplish. However, Suzuki and other automobile manufacturers have begun to equip their vehicles with plastic engine covers to discourage the average car owner from performing any maintenance themselves. Fortunately, the job is simpler than it may appear since the engine cover is only in place for cosmetic reasons. For most DIYers, the spark plugs can be replaced in 15 minutes or less.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set, metric
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket extension
  • Spark plug socket
  • Spark plugs
  • Unbolt the engine cover. Remove the bolts with a hex socket and socket wrench. Pull the engine cover away from the engine. Set it aside.

  • Disconnect the ignition coil from the wiring harness by pressing down on the wiring coupling's lever. Pull the coupler free from the ignition coil.

  • Remove the mounting bolt from the ignition coil using a socket wrench and pull the coil upwards to remove it from the engine. Set the coil aside.

  • Unscrew the spark plug using a spark plug socket and extension. Pull the spark plug out of the engine and discard.

  • Insert a new spark plug into the spark plug socket and tighten it into the engine.

  • Place the ignition coil over the spark plug. Press down firmly until the coil snaps into place over the spark plug. Secure the coil by tightening the mounting bolt with a socket wrench. Reconnect the wiring coupler to the ignition coil.

  • Repeat on the remaining spark plugs as necessary.

  • Replace the engine cover over the engine. Tighten all the mounting bolts with a socket wrench.
