How to Repair or Replace Leather Seats in a Ford Expedition

Damage to the leather seat covers in a Ford Expedition is unsightly and reduces the value of the vehicle. Some upholstery shops offer repair services, but nothing can return it to like-new condition short of replacing the covers. Ford Motor Company and several aftermarket manufacturers offer replacement seat covers in a wide variety of colors and designs. Before preparing to tackle seat cover replacement, make sure to have a large, clean work space available so the new covers aren’t damaged during the procedure.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Pocket flathead screwdriver
  • Box wrench set
  • Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers
  • Replacement seat covers
  • Use the socket set to unbolt the seat from the floor of the truck. The seat should rest on four legs, located at each corner of the seat bottom. Unclip any wiring harnesses going to seat motors or heaters, also.

  • Lift the seat out of the vehicle and move it to your clean workspace.

  • Use the box wrenches to remove the seat back from the seat bottom. The fasteners are located on the sides where the bottom and back join. Remove the bottom from the seat track.

  • Unclip the seat cover hold-downs from the bottom of the seat bottom with your fingers. Once it is unclipped, it can be rolled up and off the cushion. Repeat this with the seat back until both the bottom and back are uncovered.

  • Slide the new covers on the seat back and seat bottom. Use extreme care and patience here. This step may take 20 to 30 minutes to perform correctly. Rushing this step can result in serious damage to the new covers. Once the covers are on, re-clip the hold-downs in reverse order of how they were unclipped in Step 4.

  • Reassemble the seat in the opposite manner of its disassembly in Step 3.

  • Place the seat back in position inside the vehicle and bolt it back down in the opposite manner of how it was unbolted in Step 1. Do not forget to reconnect any wiring harnesses that were disconnected during the removal.
