How to Replace a Mercury Mystique Ignition Key

The ignition key on a Mercury Mystique uses a special chip inside the key that sends a signal to a switch in the dash allowing the vehicle to be started. This chip is called a "transponder" and is an anti-theft device made by the Ford Motor Company for their Mercury brand of vehicles. If you lose your Mystique's key, you'll need to know how to replace it.

  • Contact a Ford dealership in your area, or you can log onto contact Keylessride.com. (See Resources)

  • Order a new key. You'll need the model year of your Mystique. You'll also need the vehicle information number (VIN) of your car.

  • Pay for the key. Prices range from $29.99 up to $100 for a new ignition key for your Mystique. The key can either be reprogrammed by the dealer, or you can do it yourself. (See References 2)
