How to Clean Fuel Injectors After They Have Been Removed From the Car

Gasoline can leave deposits on your car's fuel injector nozzles once the car is shut off. These gasoline deposits can turn into hard varnish that will build up over time and clog your fuel injectors. Cleaning your fuel injectors is much cheaper than replacing larger parts of your engine that will fail if you continue to drive with clogged fuel injectors. Use a simple aerosol cleaning solvent to remove the varnish on the fuel injectors and intake valves.

Things You'll Need

  • Old clothes
  • Aerosol cleaning solvent
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • Rag
  • Purchase an aerosol cleaning solvent from your local auto repair store. Simply ask a clerk at the store for an aerosol cleaning solvent used for cleaning fuel injectors. He will be able to show the many options available for purchase.

  • Put on old clothes that you don't mind getting dirty or stained.

  • Completely spray each fuel injector with the aerosol cleaning solvent. After each fuel injector is sprayed with the solvent, place it in a 5-gallon bucket for 10 minutes. This will allow the solvent to completely clean each fuel injector.

  • Spray the aerosol cleaning solvent into the intake valves in your engine while the fuel injectors are in the bucket.

  • Wipe off each fuel injector with a rag before replacing it in your engine to remove all deposits.
