How to Torque Axle Nuts on Heavy Trucks

Torque refers to the "tightness" of a bolt or nut. Heavy trucks use specific torque specifications to make sure that important components don't come loose during normal vehicle operation. Use a special tool to properly tighten the axle nut, called a torque wrench, which may need to be special-ordered from a large auto parts outlet. You'll also need the correct-sized spindle nut socket for your truck.

Things You'll Need

  • 1/2-inch torque wrench
  • Spindle socket for your truck
  • Place the spindle nut socket over the end of the axle nut.

  • Set the dial on the handle of the torque wrench to the correct torque specification for your truck and tighten the lock on the end of the handle to prevent the dial on the wrench from moving.

  • Turn the spindle nut socket with the torque wrench until the wrench "clicks," indicating that the correct torque value has been reached.
