How to Change Fuel Injector Seals

The fuel injectors are one of the most important parts of the intake manifold in modern cars. By supplying fuel to the engine in specific increments, the fuel injectors allow the engine to start in the first place and continue smoothly. If a fuel injector seal goes bad, you may experience misfires and hard starts due to fuel leaking out of the intake manifold instead of making it to the engine. Keep your car running smoothly by replacing bad fuel injector seals.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel injector seals
  • Fuel injector puller
  • Seal lubricant
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Basic wrench set
  • Open the hood or hatch of your car where the engine is mounted. Prop it open with the hood-prop located near the front of the engine bay.

  • Using your owner's manual or a qualified shop manual for your car, remove the fuel rail from the intake manifold. Usually, the fuel rail is a silver line that runs across the top of the intake manifold.

  • Using a fuel injector puller, remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail. Be careful not to damage the injectors or any good seals.

  • Remove the fuel injector seals from the fuel injectors or fuel rail (if they stuck when the fuel injectors were removed), using a flat-head screwdriver or similar. Toss the seals aside, or keep them in a convenient place in case of fuel injector emergencies.

  • Install the new seals on the fuel injectors and lubricate them appropriately. Reinstall the fuel injectors onto the fuel rail. They should slide in easily and snap in place.

  • Reinstall the fuel rail to the intake manifold and start the car. Look for any evidence of leakage before closing the hood and driving away worry-free.
