How to Remove an Alternator on a 1998 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is one of the best selling cars in America. The 1998 model of the Honda Accord was available with either a 2.3L four-cylinder engine or a 3.0L V6 engine. This tutorial is primarily aimed at the four-cylinder engine, although removing the V6 alternator is similar except that the radiator fan must be removed.

Things You'll Need

  • Gloves
  • Pliers
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Gather your tools, pop your hood and unhook the battery. Always disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first, followed by the positive (+) battery cable. After the battery is disconnected, wait 2 to 3 minutes.

  • Look at the front of your engine bay closely. The Honda Accord alternator is up front, next to the exhaust heat shield.

  • Detach the wiring harness from the alternator. Locate the three bolts mounting the alternator. One bolt (in front) mounts the alternator to the pulley, another (on the side) mounts the alternator in position and the other (rear) is the adjustment bolt. The adjustment bolt has a locking nut attached to the other end of it.

  • Remove the adjusting bolt first. Hold the locking nut while you remove the bolt from the rear. Once the adjusting bolt is removed, remove the pulley bolt. After you remove the pulley bolt, remove the side mounting bolt.

  • Slide the alternator belt away and lift the alternator from the vehicle. You will still have to pull it hard to remove it from its mount. Be careful, the alternator is quite heavy.
