How to Fix the Window Switch on a Jeep Cherokee Sport

Power windows on an SUV like the Jeep Cherokee Sport can turn from a blessing into a curse once the switches fail. Being stuck inside a vehicle with the windows up on a hot summer day can feel like being locked inside an oven. Fortunately the window switch can easily be replaced by the home mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat Blade Screwdriver
  • Needle Nose Pliers
  • Replacement Window Switch

Removing the Window Switch

  • Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal by loosening the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the post.

  • Remove the screws that retain the interior door latch trip piece and control panel.

  • Pull the door latch away from the door.

  • Remove the clip that attaches the interior door latch to the control rod.

  • Remove the interior door latch.

  • Remove the control panel and interior door latch trim piece. Use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the wiring harnesses off the back of the control panel.

  • Remove the window switch from the trim panel. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to carefully pry the switch from the trim piece.

Installing the Window Switch

  • Carefully insert the window switch into the trim panel and use a screwdriver to engage the retaining clips.

  • Attach the wiring harness to the back of the switch.

  • Slide the trim piece into position on the door.

  • Slide the interior door latch into position.

  • Attach the door latch to the control rod and reinstall the retaining clip.

  • Reinstall the screws that connect the door latch trip piece to the door.

  • Reconnect the ground cable to the negative battery terminal.
