Power steering pumps were first used in the early 1950s, but did not become common on vehicles until the 1970s. Power steering pumps provide assist to the driver, making vehicle steering much less labor. The Dodge Durango uses a traditional hydraulic power steering pump that operates with a drive belt. Turn the vehicle off and let the engine bay cool down for at least 30 minutes. Engine components, including belts, can be extremely hot immediately after operation.
Remove the power steering belt from the pump. Lift the belt over the pulley and let it hang from the other accessories. Some Durango engines have a separate belt for accessories, others have one belt that operates everything.
Place the drain pan underneath the power steering pump to catch fluid drippings. Use the pliers to remove the two hoses attached to the pump by taking off the clamps. Let the fluid drain into the pan for 10 to 15 minutes, until the dripping stops. Cover the openings of each hose to prevent contaminants from entering.
Use the socket wrench to remove the three mounting bolts that attach the power steering pump. Slide the pump out of its mount.
