How to Replace a Low Oil Pressure Switch in a Ford Taurus

A low oil pressure switch is used for a light on the instrument panel on the Ford Taurus; while a sender, as opposed to a switch, is used for a gauge. It is important to use the correct terminology when ordering, since they are not compatible. The switch has a preset tension to turn the light on if the oil pressure drops under 10 pounds of pressure. When the light comes on, the vehicle should be shut off immediately to prevent severe damage. If the light blinks on and off it could mean that the oil is low in the engine. If found to be up to level, then there is a mechanical problem and the vehicle should not be started until the problem is found.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack Jack stands Oil pressure switch socket Set of deep well ½-inch sockets ½-inch ratchet Teflon tape
  • Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands for safety. Pull the electrical connector off the oil switch. The oil switch will be located in close proximity to the oil filter. It is a small round object about 1½ inches in diameter and screwed directly into the block.

  • Remove the low oil pressure switch with the oil pressure switch socket. The socket is made especially for the switch. In its absence, use the appropriate ½-inch deep well socket and ratchet.

  • Wrap some Teflon tape around the threads of the new switch to ensure that it does not leak. Screw the new switch in by hand as far as possible, followed by tightening with whichever tool was used to remove it. It does not have to be more than snug. Too much torque will snap it off at the block and cause serious problems in removal of the threads.

  • Plug the electrical connector back into the switch.
