A Ford F-150 with four-wheel drive has torsion bars in the front suspension. These torsion bars act like a straight spring, and the resistance of the steel in the bars supports the weight of the front of the F-150. These torsion bars are adjustable, allowing the owner to fine tune how high or low the front suspension sits. If you want to fine tune your torsion bar-equipped F-150, you can do so with just a little bit of work.
Park the F-150 on a completely level surface. Measure the distance between both the left and right sides of the F-150 and the ground using the tape measure. Take note of these two numbers for future reference.
Lift the Ford using the jack and put jack stands under the frame. Find the torsion bar, which is a 2-inch thick steel bar that is plugged into the control arm on one side and the torsion bar crossmember on the other. Locate the bolt going up and down on the crossmember; this is the torsion bar adjusting bolt.
Loosen the torsion bar adjusting bolt with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket to lower the front suspension on the Ford. Tighten the bolt to raise front suspension. Make sure you tighten or loosen the bolts on each of the two torsion bars the same amount by counting the amount of turns with the ratchet you make on each side.
Lower the Ford off the jack stands. Measure the distance to the ground from the left and right sides of the truck with the tape measure again, and compare the new numbers with the original numbers you found in step 1. Make sure the difference between these two numbers is the same on both sides. If not, place the Ford on jack stands again and adjust the torsion bars as necessary.
