How to Install a New Tail Light on the Honda Pilot

The tail light in your Honda Pilot is one of those lights you rarely know is out until someone tells you about it. Hopefully that someone isn't a person in a blue uniform holding a citation booklet. The tail light is not overly complicated to install, but it is a little tricky. You can save some money on labor charges and replace it yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Replacement tail light
  • Lift the back hatch and locate the two screws on the rail near the tail light assembly.

  • Remove the two screws with the screwdriver. This will allow the tail light assembly to swing slightly away from the tailgate rail.

  • Pull outward slightly away from the tailgate rail and then back to remove the two ball sockets holding the tail light assembly on the outer edge. Apply equal parts of tenacity and tenderness so you don't crack the lens or scratch the paint on the Pilot.

  • Locate the tail light behind the tail light assembly. There are three marked bulb sockets. Turn the socket to the left to remove it from the tail light assembly.

  • Unplug the bulb from the outlet, and insert the new bulb. Turn the lights on to test the bulb before putting everything back together. Reinsert the bulb into the tail light assembly. Reinstall the tail light assembly, making sure to properly align the ball sockets. Replace the two screws, and tighten. Close the hatch.
