How to Disassemble a Steering Column

The steering column connects the steering wheel to the rest of the car, enabling the driver to steer the car. In newer vehicles, air bags are put inside the steering wheel to protect the driver in case of an accident. The ignition is located in the steering column as well. When the starter stops working, the steering column will need to be removed in order to correct the problem. Follow the steps below in order to disassemble a steering column.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Steering wheel puller
  • Disconnect the car horn and battery. You will need to use a steering wheel puller in order to disconnect the horn. This will remove the front cover of the steering wheel. Remove the nut that is holding the steering wheel and then lift out the wheel to get to the column (see Resources below).

  • Remove the steering wheel column cover. One cover is located on top and the other on the bottom. Use a screwdriver to remove the lock plate cover plate and lock plate. There are two tabs on opposite ends of the lock plate that will need to be unlocked in order to remove it. Remove the spring to the lock plate, which is located on the shaft.

  • Remove the canceling cam and signal screws. The canceling cam looks like another plate. There are three signal screws: one screw is on top while the other two are on opposite sides towards the bottom. Use a screwdriver to remove them. Also remove the hazard flasher knob.

  • Slide the turn signal connector up to remove it. Use a 1/4-inch bracket to remove the screws from the steering wheel's supporting bracket. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the three screws that hold the upper steering column collar. Then remove the key cylinder by pressing down on its tang, which is located on the top right of the shaft.

  • Remove remaining bolts and springs in the lower steering column. Remove the main bolt that clamps the shaft, then pull the lower steering column out.
