Replace a Broken Tail Gate Handle on Ford Pickup

If you need a new tailgate handle, it may have to come from the dealer or a used parts yard. They are rarely found at auto parts stores. The process is straight forward and does not demand many tools or a high degree of skill. This is a common problem for those who use the tailgate frequently. The tailgate handle is a simple mechanism and is susceptible to breaking easily. The tools necessary to change out the handle are listed below.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of 3/8 drive torx bit sockets
  • Screwdriver
  • 10-millimeter socket
  • Ratchet
  • Lower the tailgate. If this is not possible with what is left of the handle, then use the appropriate torx head and remove all the screws located in the inside of the tailgate. Grab the two rods running from the center out to the outboard hinges and pull them simultaneously--the tailgate will open.

  • Remove the two rods attached to the brake handle crank on the inside of the tailgate. To do this, simply use the screwdriver to push down on the plastic locks attached to the lock handle. Once you have unsnapped the locks, pull the rods up and off the old handle.

  • Remove the old tailgate handle using the 10-millimeter socket and ratchet to remove the nuts holding it on. Lift the handle out of the front of the gate and discard.

  • Put the new handle through the front of the tailgate. Install the hold-down nuts and tighten them securely.

  • Place one rod at a time in position to snap into the handle and pull on it just until you can feel the spring tension. If you pull any further, the tailgate will open. At this point push the rod down into the lock on the handle and push the snap back on to hold it in place. Do the same thing to the other side.

  • Try the handle a couple of times to make sure it is adjusted right. If not unsnap the lock on the rods and make them a little tighter. Reinstall the inner cover on the tailgate using the torx screws.
