How to Change the Thermostat in a Geo Tracker

The Geo Tracker was heavily marketed through the 1990s and then discontinued in 1997. Chevy continued the design a the Suzuki Viatra. The following offers detail information about the installation of a new thermostat in the 1.3L and 1.6L engines.

Things You'll Need

  • Mechanic's toolset, including a full socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers
  • Replacement thermostat, new or rebuilt
  • New gasket for thermostat
  • Drain the engine coolant so that the level is below that of the thermostat. Detach the upper radiator hose to allow more working space.

  • Loosen and remove the mounting bolts on the thermostat housing. Lift the thermostat housing from the intake manifold. Discard the gasket.

  • Grasp the thermostat firmly and pull it from the intake manifold. Clean all the mating surfaces until they're free of gasket material, debris and dirt.

  • Set the new thermostat on the intake manifold with the spring side down. Make sure the air bleed valve is pointing towards the front of the engine.

  • Place the new gasket on the thermostat. Set the thermostat housing over the thermostat on the intake manifold. Place the thermostat housing mounting bolts in place and evenly tighten them.

  • Reattach the upper radiator hose to the housing. Fill the cooling system with the appropriate type and amount of coolant.

  • Start the engine. Check for coolant leaks. Make sure all systems are operating.
