A problem with your Passat ignition coil may cause oil leaks, stalling or fast or irregular idling. When it comes to replacing the ignition coil in a VW Passat, you need to know which type of engine you have. Although the replacement process is basically the same from engine to engine, you'll need a different special tool for the repair depending on your engine, which is indicated within the appropriate step.
Detach the negative battery cable from the terminal. This is the cable attached to the negative battery terminal post. Set your emergency or parking brake for added safety.
Identify the type of engine in your Passat. You'll need special tools for certain engines. For the 1.8L engine with an intermediate shaft, you need spark plug connector tool T10029. The 1.8L engines without an intermediate shaft require an ignition coil puller T40039 and the V8 engine requires Puller T10166.
Loosen the screws that hold the engine cover in place with a screwdriver and lift off the cover.
Expose the Passat ignition coil. On some models, you need to remove the sides of the intake manifold or the cylinder head cover.
Use a ratchet and socket or a wrench to remove the connectors that secure the ignition coil in place.
Position the special tool for your engine type on the Passat ignition coil. If you use a puller, make sure you place it on the top rib of the ignition coil. Follow the arrows on the ignition coil as you work.
Transfer the connectors or the spark plug wires to the new ignition coil. Then install it. When you finish this, replace any components you removed.
