The Ford F-Series full sized trucks have been the best selling trucks for more than three decades. The truck started production in 1948 and has continued to be produced year after year by the Ford Motor Company. Those needing to remove the oil pan on the F-Series will need to determine which model they have. The process for removing the oil pan of the F-150, 4.2L engine follows.
Clean the area where you want to drop the oil pan for the F-150. Because of the delicate nature of the engine in these vehicles, cleanliness is one of the most important factors in making this repair. This is especially true for gasket surfaces.
Place the F-Series 150 on vehicle ramps or jack and jack stands to raise the vehicle off the ground. Provide proper support for the vehicle at all times.
Locate and remove the starter in the F-Series. The starter is located under the vehicle, at the very bottom of the engine. Remove it using a wrench. Place an oil drip pan under the oil pan, which is a large pan located at the bottom of the engine.
Pry off the oil pan plug using a wrench. Dislodging the plug will allow for the oil to drain from the oil pan into the drip pan. Allow to drain fully, at least 10 minutes. Replace the oil plug once all the oil drains.
Remove the crossmember bolts (four of them) and the crossmember. Remove the oil pan transmission bolts. These are located on the oil pan, or next to it. To remove them, use a wrench and unscrew them.
Disconnect each of the 17 bolts that line the outside rim of the oil pan using a wrench. Support the oil pan with one hand while doing so.
Catch the oil pan when it falls off after the last of the bolts has been removed. Remove and discard the oil pan gasket (never reuse it) and replace with a new seal once you replace the oil pan.
