The anti-lock braking system (ABS) on the Hyundai Sonata uses a wheel sensor to monitor the wheel speed on each wheel. The ABS controller uses this information to prevent the brakes from locking during an emergency stop. If the ABS warning light comes on, it may indicate the wheel sensor has become clogged with metallic debris such as brake dust.
Determine which ABS wheel sensor your Hyundai Sonata will need. You'll want to be sure the new wheel sensor is compatible with your make and model of Sonata. ABS became standard on all versions of the Sonata in 2006.
Turn the ignition off and remove the mounting bolt for the wheel speed sensor with a socket wrench. Detach the mud ground and front wheel guard with a socket wrench if you are replacing a front wheel speed sensor. Take out the rear seat side pad if you are replacing a rear wheel speed sensor.
Disconnect the sensor's electrical connector and remove the sensor from the vehicle.
Install the new wheel sensor and connect its electrical connector. Replace the front wheel guard and mud ground with a socket wrench for front wheel speed sensors. Replace the rear seat side pad for rear wheel speed sensors. Fasten the mounting bolt for the wheel speed sensor with a socket wrench.
Turn the ignition on and clear any faults until the ABS light goes out. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the ABS.
