How to Replace an ABS Wheel Sensor in a Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang has an anti-lock braking system (ABS) wheel sensor on each wheel that provides the wheel speed to the ABS controller. The ABS controller then uses that information to determine the amount of braking force to apply to that wheel. You may need to replace the ABS wheel sensor if it becomes clogged with debris, especially metallic brake dust.

Things You'll Need

  • New ABS wheel speed sensor
  • Socket wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Determine which ABS wheel sensor your Ford Mustang will need. You'll want to be sure the new wheel sensor is compatible with your make and model of Mustang. ABS was first featured on the fourth generation models that were introduced in 1994.

  • Drive the vehicle onto a hoist and place it in neutral. Raise the vehicle and disconnect the electrical connector for the wheel speed sensor.

  • Disconnect the three pin-type retainers for the wheel speed sensor electrical harness. Remove both grommet retainers for the wheel speed sensor from the brake hose clips.

  • Remove the mounting bolt for the wheel speed sensor with a socket wrench. Detach the wheel speed sensor and its electrical harness from the vehicle as an assembly.

  • Install the new wheel speed sensor. Tighten the mounting bolt for the wheel speed sensor bolt to 11 ft. lbs with a torque wrench.

  • Attach the grommet retainers for the wheel speed sensor to the brake hose clips. Connect the three pin-type retainers for the wheel speed sensor electrical harness. Plug in the electrical connector for the wheel speed sensor and lower the vehicle.
