Your Ford Focus has an electric engine cooling fan; it is powered by your vehicle's alternator instead of a fan belt. These steps will apply to the 2.0L or VIN 3, VIN 5, VIN N and VIN P engine; the procedure for the 2.3L engine is slightly different. An amateur should be able to complete these steps within 30 minutes to an hour.
Purchase a Ford Focus cooling fan assembly. Make certain that it is the appropriate part for your vehicle's specific model year.
Raise and support your car on jack stands or ramps. Don't perform this or other maintenance when the vehicle is supported only by a jack.
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery terminal and slip some non-conductive material over the cable lead to ensure that it won't slip back into contact with the battery terminal.
Remove or disconnect, as appropriate, two pin-type retainers and the cooling fan motor's electrical connectors. No tools are needed for this step.
Release the top clips from the radiator, allowing you to remove the fan motor and shroud--essentially the fan's casing--together.
Place the new fan and shroud inside the engine compartment. Secure the clips securing the shroud at the top of the radiator.
Lower your vehicle back to the ground.
Reconnect the fan motor's electrical connectors and replace the pin-type retainers, then reconnect the negative battery cable.
