The fuel pump in a Dodge Intrepid is electric so you should check the fuses and relays before inspecting the fuel pump itself. If you have fuel in your tank but your vehicle has difficulty getting fuel, you may need to clean your fuel pump or replace it entirely. The Dodge Intrepid comes in a variety of styles and this may affect your choice of fuel pump.
Determine the fuel pump that your Dodge Intrepid will require. This depends on the make and model and engine size of your vehicle. Models made from 1993 to 1997 have a 3.3 L EGA or 3.5 L EGJ engine. Models produced after 1997 are equipped with a 2.7 L EER, 3.2 L or 3.5 L EGJ engine.
Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a socket wrench and remove the fuel tank.
Remove any loose dirt from the top of the tank and remove the fuel lines from the fuel pump by squeezing the quick-connect fittings. Disconnect the electrical connector for the fuel pump and use tool 6856 to remove the lock nut for the fuel pump by turning it counterclockwise. Remove the fuel pump and discard the O-ring from the fuel tank.
Install the new fuel pump using the items included in the kit, especially the O-ring. Ensure that the alignment tab under the fuel pump sits in the notch on the fuel tank. Use tool 6856 to torque the locking ring to 40 inch lbs.
Complete the installation by reversing the removal procedure.
