How do I Replace the Radiator Fan on an A4?

Your Audi A4's electric cooling fan may need to be replaced if the fins and motor are damaged or warped. To replace this component, you will need to know how to perform other repair and mechanical procedures.

Preparing Your A4

  • Lift your A4 and support it with jack stands. Remove the cover on the lower side of the engine and separate the electrical connectors from the cooling fan. Drain the coolant out of the cooling system, and take the radiator out of the engine compartment.

Remove the Auxiliary Electric Cooling Fan

  • Separate the forward mounted air intake duct from the radiator support panel and the air cleaner housing. Unbolt and remove the auxiliary cooling fan mounting nuts with a socket or box-head wrench. Move the cooling fan toward the front of the front end, and remove it. If your car has air conditioning, you may need to pull the fan out from between the condenser and the front of the support panel.

Installation

  • To install the new fan, reverse the steps. Tighten the bolts snugly with your wrench. Lower your A4, and refill the cooling system with either new coolant mix or the old coolant mix, if it is still good.
