How to Replace the Water Pump in a Lincoln Navigator

The water pump is the heart of the Lincoln Navigator's cooling system, circulating the coolant. A faulty water pump can cause some serious damage to the engine of your vehicle. Make sure to change out a bad water pump to keep your engine running smoothly.

Remove the Old Pump

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Place a drain pan underneath the radiator. When the engine is cool, drain the cooling system from the radiator into the pan.

  • Remove the radiator along with the fan blade assembly.

  • Take out the fan shroud and the accessory drive belt.

  • Loosen an remove the water pump pulley bolts and remove the pulley.

  • Disconnect the water pump and the heater hose.

  • Loosen and remove the water pump bolts from the pump. Make sure to take note where each bolt goes for reinstallation, as the bolts are various lengths.

  • Remove the water pump stud bolt and remove the water pump from the engine. Remove the pump housing gasket and discard.

Install the New Pump

  • Clean the water pump mounting surface.

  • Install the water pump with a new gasket and Install the water pump stud bolt and tighten it by hand temporarily.

  • Insert the water pump bolts and nuts and tighten them by hand until all are inserted, then tighten all of the bolts to 15 to 22 ft. lbs. (20 to 30 Nm).

  • Reconnect the water outlet tube for the heater if applicable.

  • Insert the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts to 15 to 22 ft. lbs.

  • Install the accessory drive belt, the fan shroud, the fan blade assembly and the radiator.

  • Reattach the negative battery cable.

  • Refill the cooling system.
