How to Disable the Alarm System on a 99 Dodge RAM 1500

In 1999, Dodge Ram 1500s offered a number of different options for buyers. One option was an in-vehicle security alarm. The alarms are engaged by an ignition system override when triggered. Unfortunately, sometimes when the alarm does not respond to the key fob, it inadvertently sets off the alarm. This can result in an embarrassing situation, especially if you're in a busy shopping center parking lot. If you want, you can disable the alarm with little trouble.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Pull the hood latch on your Dodge Ram. Exit the vehicle, raise the hood up and prop it up with the prop bar.

  • Slip the socket over the negative battery terminal bolt. Turn it to the left, or counterclockwise, to loosen it.

  • Pull the terminal up and off the negative post once you have fully loosened the battery terminal bolt.

  • Hold the negative battery terminal away from the battery and let it sit that way for approximately five minutes. This time will allow the system time to reset itself.

  • Locate the main relay box underneath the hood. It will be located on the same side of the engine block as the battery and fuse box. Pry the relay panel lid off with a flat-head screwdriver. Flip the relay panel cover upside down and inspect the relay diagram. The diagram shows you the location of the alarm relay. Pull the alarm relay up and out and then replace the relay panel cover. This disables the alarm, but allows you to still start your Ram.

  • Place the negative battery cable back on the post and tighten the bolt. Close your Ram's hood.
